What kind of education does a port radio operator receive?

The knowledge and techniques required to be a port radio operator include operating radio equipment, knowledge about ship operation and port management, database skills and English ability. Usually, training to be an operator takes about 6 months.

After joining our company, the new operator will learn basic skills at the training center near the Yokohama Harbor View Park. He/she will then learn about ship operation at a maritime training organization in Hyogo Prefecture. After that the operator will spend 5 months undergoing on-the-job training at each station. To ensure that the operator has gained the sufficient skills to become a radio operator, we hold communication practice tests at the training center before starting actual work.

With this education system, anyone can become a port radio operator with no prior experience.
